HEAVY EQUIPMENT SEMINAR
On June 12th thirty police officers from around
Michigan attended the Heavy Equipment Seminar held in Flushing, MI.
This was our first seminar designed to provide training on one specific
topic, and by judging from the attendance and enthusiasm, it would certainly
be considered a success!
The seminar started with 2 hours of classroom instruction by Training
Committee chair Doug McCallister, MSP ATPA. Search and seizure, changes in
PIN construction, PIN plate placement, and other items were discussed in
length.
After lunch, the entire class met at the Enron Corporation equipment yard,
which was located a short distance from the classroom.
In addition to the Enron equipment that was on the premises, arrangements
had been made with Hertz - Heavy Equipment Division to have some specific
items there.
It was at this time that the attendees were given the opportunity to crawl
in, on, and around all the equipment on the premises. They were able to
view, firsthand, the PIN plate locations, engine numbers, and alternate
methods of identification. When all the equipment at the Enron yard was
examined, those that were interested headed over to the Hertz – Heavy
Equipment yard a couple of miles away.
There are a number of people to
thank for their efforts in putting on this seminar. Shawn Borowicz and Ken
Tassie were the on-site coordinators who were responsible for everything
from the classroom to the equipment, and to Doug McCallister for the
classroom instruction.
Special thanks to Kevin Gaby of the Pipefitters Local for the use of their
training room, Steve Cameron of Hertz-Heavy Equipment Division for providing
equipment, and Dennis Smith of the Denron Corporation for allowing us to go
through his yard and look at the equipment on site. Obviously, without their
help, this seminar would not have been possible.
