SNOWMOBILE / ALL – TERRAIN VEHICLE SEMINARMAVTI hosted a snowmobile / ATV identification seminar on October 30th. The seminar, believed to be the first of its kind presented to law enforcement in Michigan, was held at the Best Western Alpine Valley Hotel in Gaylord. A total of forty-eight police officers, representing 22 different police departments, were in attendance. The lead instructor was Ofc. Mark David of the Oscoda Township Police Department, who is quickly establishing himself as a leading authority in the field of snowmobile theft and identification. Mark was assisted by MAVTI Training Committee Chair Doug McCallister, of the Michigan ATPA. The instructors outlined the scope of the snowmobile and ATV theft problem in the state of Michigan. Attendees learned the various VIN systems currently in use by the manufacturers, alternative methods of identification, theft methods, and search and seizure issues. After a short session on trailers the attendees were given the opportunity to crawl around and examine a number of different snowmobiles and ATV’s that had been brought to the seminar by local dealers. Thanks to Extreme Powersports located in Gaylord, Gaylord Arctic Cat and Kawasaki, and Big Meadow Equipment in East Jordan for providing the various machines for the seminar. The comments heard by MAVTI Board and Training Committee members at the
conclusion of the seminar were very positive. They felt that the seminar was
educational and enjoyable and many attendees specifically stated their
appreciation for targeting a problem that they deal with often in northern
Michigan.
