Training

The primary focus of the Michigan Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators is to provide quality, affordable training to law enforcement and SIU personnel. In our short history, hundreds of police officers and have participated in our training programs making MAVTI the leader in auto theft training in Michigan.

MAVTI offers a variety of training topics. We have two experienced auto theft investigators on staff whose sole responsibility is to travel the state and provide free instruction to police officers on auto theft issues. In addition, we offer more advanced training geared to the serious investigator in the form of specialized one-day seminars and hold an annual conference that contains items of interest to all groups.

FREE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING

MAVTI has partnered with the Michigan State Police and the Auto Theft Prevention Authority to provide auto theft training for both the individual officer as well as entire police departments, all free of charge.

Our training schedule lists a number of dates that are open to all police officers. However, if these dates do not fit your schedule, MAVTI will provide training to your department at a date and time convenient for you. In fact, many police departments are utilizing MAVTI during their annual “in-service” training program.

Departments and officers can chose from three subject options, which are outlined below. All MAVTI training is MCOLES certified. In addition, each option can be tailored to meet your specific needs including training on the afternoon and midnights shifts to avoid overtime situations. Again, this is FREE OF CHARGE!

To schedule training for your department or if you have any questions regarding MAVTI Training, please contact Ken Tassie at 517 404-6767 or Doug McCallister at 517 666-0096.

Option 1: Basic auto theft instruction for the road officer. Attendees will learn the basic keys to detecting stolen vehicles, how to identify them, legal issues surrounding auto theft related matters and interviewing techniques for auto theft cases.
Option 2: This class examines the problems associated with “specialty vehicles” including motorcycles, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, and watercraft. Attendees will learn how to spot re-stamped vehicles, alternative methods of identification, and other investigative techniques.
Option 3: Essential training for police officers! Heavy equipment and tractor-trailer thefts are increasing and police officers oftentimes overlook these high dollar items. Attendees will learn the basics of detection and identification of these vehicles.

SPECIALIZED ONE-DAY SEMINARS

MAVTI offers one-day seminars designed for the serious investigator on a variety of topics.

These seminars, held in pre-selected locations, are free to the MAVTI member but require a small registration fee for the non-member.  Seminars in the past have included topics such as heavy equipment identification, watercraft identification, Harley Davidson identification, snowmobile identification, and a seminar designed for the insurance adjuster/appraiser.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Our annual conference includes specialized instruction on various auto theft topics by professionals from the US and Canada and attracts representatives from both law enforcement and the insurance industry from all over the state. A small registration fee is required for all attendees, however, MAVTI members can attend at a discounted rate. The conference includes instruction for both the beginning investigator/patrol officer and the seasoned veteran. New investigative techniques and recent trends are discussed and it is a tremendous opportunity to network with other dedicated professionals.
